15 of the Best Juice Recipes for Battling a Cold

Today I am going to outline a variety of different juices for those suffering with a common cold. 

Never underestimate a common cold as it can develop into something worse.

Doctors regard this health issue as a slight viral infection of the throat, nose, upper airways and sinuses and usually clears up within a period of two weeks. Sneezing, sore throat, runny or blocked nose or cough are major symptoms but in more severe cases, you may experience fever, aching muscles and headache.

Although your general cold has no direct cure, over-the-counter medications can be used to prevent it from further complications most especially if it stays longer than a couple of weeks. On top of this, hydration by means of drinking lots of water and liquids is highly beneficial.

  • ¼ cup fresh ginger root or 1 Tbsp dried
  • ¼ cup fresh turmeric root or 1 Tbsp dried
  • 1 orange, peeled
  • 1 lemon, peeled
  • Water, honey and ghee/coconut oil as needed.

Method:

Place all ingredients through your juicer. If using dry spices, juice the citrus and then add to a blender with ½ cup water and the dried spices and blend until smooth.

To prepare

1. Mix 1oz of concentrated mix with 1 cup of hot water. Stir in raw honey, ghee or coconut oil.

2. Sip.

3. Repeat every 2 hours.

3. Ginger Lemon Cold and Flu Tonic

This tangy tonic is perfect for the flu season. Lemon juice, ginger and honey as its ingredients make up for one soothing drink.

  • 3 cups (720ml) warm filtered water
  • 1/2 cup (120ml) fresh lemon juice
  • 1/4 cup (60ml) raw local honey or alcohol-free liquid lemon-flavored stevia
  • 1 tablespoon minced ginger, plus more to taste
  • Pinch of cayenne pepper (optional)

Method:

  1. Throw everything into the blender, and blast on high for about 30 seconds until well combined.
  2. Sip and heal.

4. Super Sinus Juice

Relieve yourself from a stuffy nose with this perky drink. The powers of lemon, apple, and orange combined give you a fresh start each day.

Super Sinus Juice
makes about 12 ounces, 2 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1 large orange or minola, peeled
  • 1/2 lemon, de-seeded and peeled
  • 1 medium sweet or tart apple, chopped 
  • *Fuji, Honeycrisp, Granny Smith are my faves
  • 1 Tbsp fresh ginger, skin removed
  • cayenne spice
note: I always prefer organic ingredients when juicing.

Method:

1. Wash all your ingredients.

2. Peel your orange and 1/2 lemon - and remove the lemon seeds. Orange seeds are OK, since they aren't as bitter. Chop your apple into chunks that will fit in your juicer. You can juice the entire apple - core and all. Chop ginger into small chunks.

3. Before you start juicing, be aware that there are two procedures for this juice. You can use just your electric juicer. Or you can use both an electric juicer and a citrus juicer: 1) Add the citrus directly to your juicer and juice it pulp/skin and all. This will result in a 'thicker' juice since some of the pulp/skin juice will be extracted and is a bit thicker than pure citrus juice. 2) Juice the citrus in a citrus juicer/squeezer separately and add it to the apple/ginger juice. This will result in a thinner, less pulpy juice. Your choice.

4. Start juicing all your ingredients. Stir gently to swirl the flavors.

5. Pour into serving glasses and top with cayenne. One tiny pinch to a few bold dashes will work. You can always add more later.

2. Place the lemon and ginger slices in the mason jar, alternating layers of each.

3. Slowly, pour honey over the lemon and ginger. Allow the honey to sink down and around the lemon and ginger slices. Fill jar to the top with honey and seal tightly.

4. Store in the refrigerator. Over time, the mixture will start to turn into a loose jelly.

5. When you are in need of some soothing tea, scoop 2-3 tablespoons into a mug full of hot water—be sure to scoop whole pieces of ginger and lemon. Allow to steep for 3-4 minutes and sip away.

  • 2 cucumbers
