Doing a Grapefruit Cleanse

Internal cleansing of the body to rid it of toxins and waste remains ever popular today and includes fasting and dieting. Learn how a grapefruit cleanse can work for you by burning the fat you have accumulated in your body and helping you keep off unnecessary pounds.

Cleansing, in alternative medicine’s context, helps keep the body’s organs in optimal working condition by removing the many toxins, waste matter, and other potentially harmful substances a person has ingested. And while there are many types of cleansing diets, one of the best involves consuming grapefruit.

Anybody, according to naturopathic doctor Linda Page, benefits from cleansing because the body comes out of what might be called hibernation. Cleansing is also a way in which you can jump-start the body for a healthier and more active life. You have to drink a lot of fluids including water and juices; in this case, a lot of grapefruit juice.

The Grapefruit Diet

Grapefruit can help rid your body of excessive amounts of alcohol, refined flour, processed meats and sugars, and other chemical-laden beverages and foods. The main purpose of cleansing is not only removing the toxins but also making sure you don’t consume any more foods and beverages that will add, rather than flush out, toxins.

Grapefruit is a rich food source of fiber and one of the world’s most nutritionally dense foods, meaning you obtain many nutritive values for each calorie that you consume. Some of these nutrients are found in grapefruit’s flesh which contains fiber, which is really a type of indigestible carbohydrate.

Fiber enables you to eat less and feel full for longer while it helps remove all kinds of solid waste from your colon, also known as the large intestine. Consuming fiber-rich foods like grapefruit means no build up of solid waste occurs, leading to the loss of all those unwanted pounds.

The addition of grapefruit juice to a diet can help with weight loss and lower levels of blood sugar or insulin and reduce the risk of acquiring diabetes. The incorporation of grapefruit juice into your meals will help you eliminate your unwanted fat and result in unwanted pounds dropping off quickly.

There are several versions of a grapefruit cleanse but all of them will involve either grapefruit juice or grapefruit at your every meal. And unlike other diets in which foods with high fat content are taboo, you can consume mayo, eggs, butter, salad dressing, and bacon on a grapefruit diet. Sounds pretty good to me!

This particular grapefruit diet relies on the fruit’s ability to burn fat; that is why you can eat any fatty foods you want including fried chicken, hamburgers, and dairy products as long as they are unsweetened. Carbohydrates, which are converted into sugar, are naturally restricted, meaning you are not allowed to eat any of the following:

  • Any kind of processed, refined or white sugar.
  • Pasta including those made with whole wheat.
  • Grains including the whole grain variety.
  • Sweetened cereals.
  • Potatoes.
  • Rice.
  • Green Peas
  • All kinds of bread including those made with whole wheat.
  • White onions
  • Plantains
  • Lima and dried beans
  • Corn
  • Sweet Potatoes
  • Vegetables and fruits which are naturally sweet

Your typical grapefruit cleansing diet may look something like this and it is up to you to consider whether or not you should go on it. Just remember to consult your doctor first before you begin this to ensure that it is safe for you, especially if you have existing health conditions and are on certain medications:

An Example Day Doing The Grapefruit Diet

  • Two Eggs cooked any way
  • Four small sausages, four strips of bacon or two slices of ham.
  • Four ounces of unsweetened grapefruit juice.

  • Unlimited meat, fish and other seafood or poultry cooked in any way.
  • Any salad that doesn’t have any naturally-sweet food items such as dates, beets, watermelon, carrots, lychees, podded peas, pineapples, rutabagas, bananas, and sweet potatoes.
  • Four ounces of unsweetened grapefruit juice.

  • Four ounces of grapefruit juice.
  • Unlimited meat, fish and other seafood or poultry cooked in any way.
  • Salad made with red or green (but not white) onions, broccoli, cucumbers, cabbage, spinach, radishes, and lettuce.

You may take coffee or tea but ensure you don’t add sugar to either and remember to drink between eight and ten glasses of water daily. Most dieters may find these rules as boring as they are simple. The solution is to vary the vegetables, fruits, and meats that you include in your grapefruit diet.
